Question:
How to sabotage my a/c system or at least make it seem like it's broken?

Ok, before you judge me let me explain...I live in an apartment with a roommate who insists on running the a/c constantly. It's currently 60 degrees where I am, and he refuses to open his window. I've asked him many times to just open his window and he says he will, but never does! I feel it's such a waste of energy!

I'm wondering is there a way for me to make it seem like the a/c's broken so he just gives up on trying to turn it on? We have a central a/c unit built into the apartment, with a main thermostat. I'm not too worried about cost, or anything like that because our apartment takes care of all maintenance

Go to the circuit breaker and kill the power to the a/c.

Pries off the plastic panel over the control box.

MAKE SURE THERE IS NO POWER IN THE BOX with a tester.

Pull out a likely looking wire.

Close it up.

CAREFUL!!

When you turn on power it might short out and cause a fire.

Also, the maintenance guys will immediately know it was sabotage.

If you did sabotage the unit, or make it look as though you did.....wouldn't your roommate just call maintenance and have it fixed (or find out that it's not broken)? I don't think sabotage or faking a breakdown is the answer.

Explain to your roommate that you have equal rights to the temperature in your shared apartment. Say something like, "Buddy, I live here, too and pay half the rent. We must compromise on the a/c". Then accept that he gets an equal stake in the situation, and the two of you work out a fair compromise.

If he is a decent person, once he realizes how much this is bothering you, he will be fair about it.

First off don't be messing with the a/c because the first thing he's gonna do is call maintenance to fix it and they'll know it was tampered with. If they guess it was you they could stick you with a bill for fixing it.

You could just turn the a/c off and open the windows yourself. Tell him if he can't compromise on this a/c thing you're gonna start looking for another place. You pay half the bills you have a right to some fresh air once in awhile. Good luck.

Speak up more forcefully and tell him or her it's uncomfortable for you.

To fake a broken anything seems ....well childish.
