Question:
Should I try dating apps again?

I don't like dating apps as it's a meat market, guys sending messages to any woman vaguely passable with little interest in who they are as a person and guys just looking for hook-ups (I want a relationship).

I've not had the best luck on dating apps or dating full-stop this past year, also I feel kind of pathetic on dating apps as it is but as I've gone on/off them so often I worry people will see me on there and think 'oh it's her again, she's still not found anyone...how pathetic'. It's also slim pickings locally too it seems.

But I don't know how else to meet men, I've tried the usual things like volunteering, sitting in coffee shops, going to free events, joining a gym, etc. but it's just too rare to even see a guy I like.

Not just yet. You sound desperate and already coming up with reasons why it will fail. What you need is some counseling. You need to figure out why you haven't dated in a year, why you are so pessimistic, why you even assume people will notice whether or not you are on or off an app, and if your attitude is the reason things aren't working out.

If there are "slim pickings" in your area, then you may need to move. Really. If you have tried and tried and tried and feel you have exhausted all possibilities then clearly doing the same thing again is futile, right?

You might also try eHarmony rather than the apps that are more for hookups or serial dating.
