My friend has a POF account and started talking to a guy she found on there on Thursday of last week. He is from Australia, lives in California and is moving to Pittsburgh, PA at the end of August. He is in Australia right now visiting his family. He has a 5 year old daughter from a previous relationship. He says he is an owner of a construction company and makes $250,000 a year. Over the weekend she talked to him on the phone and it turned out that her cell phone bill from the calls totalled to almost $700. He says he will pay for it.... Monday she called me to tell me that they are engaged and getting married October 8, 2011. WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

I am extremely skeptical of this, very worried for her, she doesn't want to hear any of it, she says she is IN LOVE and that he is sent from God. I can't believe this is happening!

I went on scamwarners.com and found similar stories and tried telling her to look at it, but she wont have it. I can't let this happen.

What do i do??
Is there anyway I can find out who this guy really is and help her?

She is being scammed and to pay for that phone bill he is going to send her counterfeit chcks

There is NO man in the world who asks a woman he has never met to marry him after 5 days - especially a man with a child. He would not even consider marrying anyone until he had met the woman in person, spent time with her, and sees how she and his daughter react

What you need to do ASAP is set up a fake profile on that sam dating site and start chatting with him, flatter him, pretend you are falling for him and you wish he lived in your city -- then show her the emails where he is promising to marry you - because he is sending the same messages to everyone

Nobody can be so blind or stupid to believe a man she has never met and knows NOTHING about except the fake story he told her, is really in love unless she has serious mental problems

And you can tell her my friend Mark's story. He lives in London and spent a YEAR chatting with a woman in California (phone, email and IM but NEVER on Skype). She seemed amazing - she said she was 32, never married, no kids, was a pediatric nurse, very sweet. He wanted to really get to know her so he took a 3 month leave from his job to go visit her, hoping that after 3 months he would consider proposing to her. He ended up flying home after 3 days because she had lied about everything. She was not 32, she was 47. She was not the cute average size girl in the picture, she weighed at least 300lbs. She had been married. She had 2 teenagers that she emotionally abused. She was not a nurse - she couldn't keep any job longer than 4 months. And the sweet lady on the phone was the most negative, awful, mean and emotionally abusive person he had ever met. He was devastated and could not believe he was duped - and this was after a YEAR that she was able to hide her lies

But honestly you or someone you know need to contact this man from another profile and prove to your friend that he is telling everyone the same story

The first answer is correct in that all major social sites seed profiles in the beginning. It's likely even true for Yahoo Answers, as I know for fact it is for other question/answer sites (I used to work in marketing, and have even done a bit of freelancing in that area). This doesn't mean every site that does this is a scam. It's a common marketing tool to attract users. I have no experience with plenty of fish, but a similar free site (okcupid) is definitely a real site with real users. I have lots of friends who use it as a social site like facebook, but more interesting because of the tests. So those 6 month old profiles could be other people using it as a social site. It could also be people looking for casual relations rather than a long-term relationship, or people just looking for online penpals or even friends in their area. I know people who have been on dating sites for years. To get a date without using a site, do something social as a hobby, where you see the same people regularly. Join a class or club that interests you. Ask friends to introduce you to other friends. It's not completely weird to ask someone out who's working a register, but I personally wouldn't accept a date with someone I had never talked to before. You could try it out, but expect to get rejected more often than normal.

I myself agree Markus Friind doesn't have morals. I also discontinue my membership after I caught a gentleman using another man photo's and pretending to be him, I informed this man and then reported this guy twice to plenty of fish, but they continue to let him have this fake profile. It for sure was a scam, this person came on really strong saying he was in love with me, wanting my phone number, the first time he wrote to me, and wanted me to call him, and this wasn't the first time, I've caught someone, I believe Markus gets a cut in this scam.

Plenty of Fish, is the worst of all dating sites. And they are all pretty much a waste of time. But, for POF I find that the level of immaturity of the women, was finally too much to deal with. We re not talking about woman in their late teens and early twenties (and they are not much better). More like, mid fifties to sixties; parents; grandparents. I don t claim to be above anyone else. But you would think, women that have been married many years and raised children. Wouldn t be so childish and superficial at this stage in their lives.

I assume the cell phone bills was from international calling. Tell her to get on Skype for cheaper rates for now. Most of the time its fake profiles of hot women scamming guys but it goes both ways with profiles of supposedly successful men looking for a wife.

She needs to be aware and skeptical of any attempts of him to ask her for money for ANYTHING. I haven't come across any POF scammers yet myself but I've seen tons of scams in my email from spammers.

There could be all sorts of reasons why he suddenly needs money and how his money is tied up or how he needs someone in the states to do a transaction that he can't do because he is out of the country. Love makes people blind and the scammers are aware of that. She at least needs to be aware that he may ask her for money for an emergency loan that only she can help him with for something. If she at least hears that it may happen before it actually does happen hopefully she will come to her senses.

Something you have to ask yourself about your friend. Is she trophy wife material? Is she beautiful, young, hot, and what rich successful men are after? If she is not then why is this guy all over her? You can't approach her with this because she will just think you are being jealous.

OR he could actually be for real and this is her fairy tale ending.

I recently have been talking to a girl and she has been sending me nudes even though I didn't ask for them. Her profile says she is of age but yesterday she said she had to admit something and told me she was only 15. I basically said no more you are underage and way younger than me and she kept pushing it, I stopped responding. Today I got a phone call from her "father" saying how I destroyed his family and that he is getting rid of the phone but in order to do that he has to pay a cancelation fee of $395 since it's a brand new phone and he won't turn me over to the police for soliciting a minor, indecent exposure, and possession of child pornography if I pay the cancelation fee. I live in Wisconsin but the number is a South Carolina number and her profile says she lives in northern Illinois which is closer to my house. This has to be a scam in my mind I didn't know she was underage until she told me and I didn't do anything since. I don't want to go to jail if this really is real and I don't want to pay a scammer. HELP!!

I saw a really beautiful woman pictured in her bikinis on a yought and ski resort driving a merc

It turned out this lady was in her 60s ...sent photos of herself 30 years prior..

I met another woman very pretty attractive looking for partner American living in Africa it turned out her photos were those of a Bollywood star in India.

Beware 9/10 I found are scams

Never send money on line

Never accept at face value

If you don't have skype ask for their photo with the date on it or them holding showing the date.

Most times men send pictures of their ex's and fool you in to sending money...

American sites African one are all scams so are far eastern Turkish Malaysian Hong kong etc..

The problem with online dating is that most of the dating websites are nothing but a waste of time. Most of the sites have a lot of fake profiles making it very hard to actually interact with someone. Trust me on this, I have a lot of experience with wasting time like this:)

Check out http://www.okdatingsites.com for a list of the best dating sites (casual, adult, cross-cultural, marriage, black, christian etc) . The sites are chosen as the best based on a clever formula; it's not based on the amount of users and on how many people interact on the website. In other words, if you join the sites listed there you will actually find what you are looking for. Good Luck!

There is a group on POF stating that they are a marine stationed overseas, in this case Turkey. Actually several pictures are posted. They send flowers right off the bat to get you off guard, fall in love quickly and then tell you a friend was killed in combat and they need money for some reason. IF YOU WATCH THEIR MESSAGES CLOSELY eNGLISH IS A SECOND LANGUAGE FOR ONE OF THE WRITERS BECAUSE THE SYNTAX CHANGES BUT THEY ARE VERY GOOD.

Plenty Of Fish is for free. How they make money?

It is so easy to answer it :they are selling our email address. The owner, Markus Frind doesn't have morals, his moral is money. He is selling the e-mail addresses even the Russian Mafia, the worst of the worst scammers. No blush face for Markus.
