Is it ok to just randomly message a girl on myspace?

there's a girl who goes to my school (one grade younger) that i'm interested in, and I'd like to get to know her more. We've only had maybe two conversations (both on myspace and initiated by her in response to bulletins) She isn't in any of my classes but occasionally i'll pass her in the hall. Is it ok to just randomly message her? If so what should i say? I'm not trying for a relationship yet or anything i just want to get to know her cause she seems awesome. I'm not too great with these kinds of things so don't make fun of me lol

Invite her somewhere. Tell her you were planning to (insert fun activity here) on a certain day, and ask her if she'd like to join you. It wouldn't be a date, but you could hang out with her and learn more about her. Being with her in person, I think, would be more fun than asking her if she likes country music, over the internet.

say hi to her in the hallways...and sure, ask a simple question about something on her page..maybe add a comment about a picture and start up a conversation
