I agree with your boyfriend you hair probably needs to be cut.Personally i prefer short hair that is layered like a layered bob or a pixie cut. If you are nervous doing it all at once,have it cut in stages. I think short hair is much more stylishand you will get noticed a lot more in a short haircut.

Bout shoulder length or a bit longer, but I don't really mind as long as the girl in question likes it how it is.

Just past the shoulders. Just above the butt is a bit too much. But that's just for me. Whatever makes you happy is probably what you should go for. Or maybe find a happy medium for both you and your boyfriend.
