Does the boy pay for everything in a relationship?

In American culture, is it customary in a relationship for the boy to pay for everything, such as dinner, souveniers, drinks at a bar, well, literally everything when they date?

I am from the UK. I went out with an American girlfriend while we were in China and she expected me to pay for everything. She never paid for anything and when she left for good, I bought her an expensive pearl ring and she got me nothing. Well actually, she gave me a Russian doll that I bought for her as a souvenir to her friend, but she never got round to giving it to her friend.

I have a real feeling that she was golddigging. Does the boy really pay for everything in American culture?

It depends on how the arrangement was made. If you invited her to the trip, then she would reasonably expect you to pay for the trip. It would have been nice if she had offered to help pay for some of the expenses. If you said, "Would you like to meet me there?" that gives a more reasonable expectation that she would help you pay for her expenses.



As for the gift, well, a gift is a gift. It was your choice to give it to her.



Was she gold digging? Maybe. Is that behavior typical? Hard to say. I don't know many American women who get the chance to meet a foreign boyfriend in China. So the entire situation is atypical.

That is what is custom. Though if she is a worthy girl she will not accept always being paid for. If she is always asking you to buy her stuff or orders expenive food everytime u eat out expecting you to pay she is just a gold digger. A girl that sometimes wants to buy you something or pay for dinner is the kind you want.

If he is very culture, and a Gentleman then yes. I am the old fashion kind of Lady. And no it does not mean if she is a gold digger, if she was look how she acts and looks how she dress. =)
