My granddad calls me a know it all all the time even though I'm not one, don't claim to be, and I don't act like it. I express my opinion on how I think it is, and all the sudden, I'm a know it all. Yet he says "I've been on this Earth longer than you so I think I know a thing or 2" and I sometimes say "well I've been on Earth long enough to know a thing or 2 myself" I can't know anything without him calling me a know it all, not only that, he acts like he's been through the worst of life, since he was born in 1950, he said he had to work on a farm after school everyday until he was 5 or for 5 years, well I don't think picking cotton on a farm for 5 years is gonna kill you. Then he says **** like "I've done forgotten more than you'll ever know. How the fūck does he know? I could know 2 times more than him by the time him and I die. Point is, I don't think I'm a know it all, I just express my opinion on how I think it is, which I guess is considered to be a know it all in my family

What facts do you use to support your opinions? Your grandfather has seen many things in his life: he has seen the development and testing of the hydrogen bomb, the arms race, the Cold War, nuclear non proliferation treaties. He has seen the establishment of NASA, the first man on the moon the launch of Voyagers 1 & 2. The Mariners, . He has seen the eradication of polio and smallpox.

Your grandfather lived through the civil rights movement, the Viet Nam War protests, the desegregation of schools in the US, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the dismantling of Apartheid, the former European African colonies become independent countries. He has seen the break up of the USSR . He has seen the development of the personal computer and internet.

In terms of government he has seen what policies work and which ones don't. In his lifetime your grandfather has seen so many changes in the world that it would be impossible to list them all. In fact the world you live in is due to your grandfather's generation, just as old age security pensions and unemployment insurance is due to his grandfather's generation.

An opinion which is well thought out will be listened to and the next time you express your opinion try to keep in mind the depth of your world experiences.

I have gotten that too all my life because I have a really good memory for trivia. By the time I was in college the class bully called me "Captain Knowledge". He only did verbal bullying and eventually we became friends. My father was also like that and it was really tempting by the time I graduated to tell him that yes, I did know more than he did. Not the same stuff but more.

But there is no point in arguing with someone like that. Just say calmly "You may be right" and change the subject. Because even if you know more, it is best to leave those with such illusions to them.
