Call me old fashioned. I think the gal should take the man's name as a sign of love and respect. Afterall, he was good enough to marry, right?

Sure, why not? I'm open to it. Hyphenating both last names (for both guy and girl) works well too. Marriage has evolved beyond its original purposes. For example, the abbreviation "Mrs." was a derivative of "Mr's" -- a sign that the wife belonged to the man. Since many women come into marriage with their own property, the abbreviation "Mrs." seems fairly antiquated. So does the automatic assumption that a woman should assume her bethrothed's surname.

What's the best answer for you and your partner? That's really the question to ask yourselves in a spirit of love and respect.

I wouldn't care, as long as I didn't lose my name! I really don't the point in marriage....it's just a formality to me. But if I did get married, the guy would totally take my name, or keep his...for I am not changing mine (it's way too cool!). I don't know why it's considered what it is...people just do that stuff. I think it's cool for the guy to take the girl's name, but really it's whatever the two want that matters!

I would take his if it wasn't a boring average name and especially if he was the last man in his family with that name so it can carry on.

I won't take his if it's boring, common or I just like mine better, but then I'm very possessive about my last name and it's on the verge of dying out as well.

If both of us have uncommon last names that need to be carried on I hope that we'll make a compromise about name some children with one name and some with another.

I don't like the hyphen thing at all though. Pick one and stick with it.

If I didn't have a brother, I definitely would! I don't want my name to stop going down. But seeing as I do, I wouldn't mind as long as he didn't have a weird one like "Buttman" (seriously, someone had that name).

HOWEVER, if taking someone's name is a sign of respect, why does he woman have to respect the man in that way all the time? Why doesn't the man give the woman that form of respect?

No, the man is still the head of the household. I also would not get married and keep my maiden name. Call me old fashioned but I think of it as respect for my husband that I took his name and I am happy and honored that he chose me to be his wife.

Love broadbents answer though, I had a jacked up maiden name too.

If he wants to take it he can. I would take it as a compliment if he wanted it. Waaaay back in the day, it was the mother's last name that was taken, NOT the man's.

I got married and kept my last name and added his to it so it was hyphenated.

I dont see why. its very widely done in japan when the family has no son to carry on the name then the son in law is asked to adopt the wifes surname~~~

Yes i would, my husband really doesn't know any of his family and could care less about his dads side( where he gets his name) of the family however i was raised with a lot of pride to my name and not to dishonor it.

if his last name sucked, then why not.

i suppose if women choose not to take

their husband's name, then why not have

a guy take his wive's name. i had a teacher

back in high school who was all hippied out and

took his wives last name. i thought that was cool.

I think in today's world you can do whatever you want. If the girl wants the guy to take her name and he is agreeable, then why not! Today's world lets you do whatever fits your needs.
